The satellite image on the right shows the locations of wildfires in California on July 9, 2008 (same day as the picture of Hoopa Valley above).  Note how Hoopa Valley is blanketed by smoke from nearby fires.  The image on the left was taken on July 28 and it shows no smoke at Hoopa Valley.   (Click on image for higher resolution.)
A sampling project was carried out from June 28 to July 28 of 2008 to study the composition of wildfire-generated PM2.5 and to compare the results with back trajectories on satellite maps.  8-hour samples collected at Davis underwent x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, hybrid integrating plate and sphere (HIPS) analysis, and ion chromatography.  Eight (1 for each hour of sampling) 48-hour-long back trajectories were plotted on a satellite map along with fire information to give a visual representation of the transport of aerosols to Davis.
Satellite maps were compiled using the software ArcGIS and satellite images from Modis Rapid Response System.  Fire data were obtained from InciWeb and W.I.S.E. Fire Tracking.  Back trajectories were plotted using the HYSPLIT Model from the Air Resources Laboratory (ARL) of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
