TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – There are 33,000 home owners in Lucas County that may qualify for the Home Energy Assistance Program, but the deadline is March 31. Guidelines are based on income and household size.

Additionally, assistance is available for people who need help with utility bills.
The need for assistance is so great in northwest Ohio that local agencies got together to make sure residents know of the help available. The Economic Opportunity Planning Association (EOPA), WSOS, Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS), United Way and Columbia Gas of Ohio are encouraging those who qualify to apply before the March 31 deadline.
"With the job loss, the unemployment rate as high as it is — Lucas County right now is the eighth largest poor city in the nation. Of course people need help," said Tomeka Rushing with Economic Opportunity Planning Association (EOPA).
Singer says her electric and gas bills have dramatically dropped."It has helped me a lot," she said. "Yes it has, and I appreciate it."
To find out if a household qualifies or to apply for assistance, contact United Way 2-1-1, or in Lucas County EOPA at 1-866-504-7392 and in Wood, Seneca, Ottawa or Sandusky counties, call WSOS at 1-800-775-9767 or NHS at (419) 691-2900.
