2010 April 16: AK Fairbanks: Where does wood smoke fall as a contributor to PMs?

FAQ | Posted April 16, 2010

Q: Where does wood smoke fall percentage-wise as a contributor to PMs?

A: At this point our best information is that it’s around 40-80 percent. I think it’s going to lie in the 50-60 percent line for Fairbanks based on the data we’ve seen so far. In some communities like out in Goldstream Valley and North Pole, it’s almost 80 percent of their total particulate matter that we measure, and although there isn’t a lot of particulates coming in the Goldstream Valley, most of it is from wood smoke because there’s nothing out there burning except for cars and wood. – Jim Connor
