2010 May 9: PA: Penn Future working to protect citizens from Outdoor wood boilers

PennFuture is working to protect citizens from nuisance emissions
and particulate pollution caused by outdoor wood boilers (OWBs).
During the combustion process, these boilers release fine particle and other air pollution linked to asthma, reduced lung function, heart problems and even premature death.

PennFuture has advocated a strong statewide rule to reduce this air pollution and protect the public health.
In testimony and written comments, we urged the Department of Environmental Protection to strengthen the rule. However, in its current form, the rule has rolled back protections. The Air Quality Technical Advisory Committee has expressed its concerns with this retreat.
While we await final Department action, we are working with neighbors dealing with air pollution to evaluate options at the local level.
